About The East Bay

While San Francisco is seen as the heart of the Bay Area, the East Bay has put together a strong case for the title. San Francisco suffers from persistent fog (even in the summer!), crowded streets and a lack of parking whenever you need it; the East Bay gives you that fabled California sun, wide avenues and abundant parking.

The highlight of the East Bay is its boundless cultural and environmental diversity. In Oakland, you’ll find a city where over 81 languages are spoken. California cuisine finds its roots in Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto, the epicenter of the food revolution that brought freshness and innovation to the American culinary scene. Mt. Diablo, the highest peak in the Bay Area, is an ideal day or weekend getaway for campers, outdoor enthusiasts or families - a mere 20 minutes away. The East Bay park system is extensive and ubiquitous, found everywhere from the water’s edge along the Bay to up and over the East Bay Hills, and many points between.

Comprised of vibrant neighborhoods where a sense of history and pride are evident, the East Bay offers the cultural richness of urban living without sacrificing space. From urban lofts near Jack London Square to beautiful turn-of-the-century Victorian homes nestled in Piedmont, the East Bay is home for true California living.

The City of Albany

Albany’s ambiance and location in a major metropolitan area make it a great place to raise a family. Located on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay, across from the Golden Gate Bridge, Albany prides itself on being a safe, community-oriented city with strong services and programs for youth, families and the elderly. It is a city made up primarily of single-family homes and small businesses.
Within Albany itself you will find Golden Gate Fields, one of the largest thoroughbred racetracks in the States. Throughout Albany there are sidewalk cafes, as well as numerous full-dining establishments that offer everything from the simple to a variety of international dishes. Solano Avenue features all the amenities of a main street coupled with some of the finest dining in all of the Bay Area.
Albany is often referred to as "kid town," with over half of the population 35 years of age or younger. Albany’s strong sense of family has led to its schools having an outstanding reputation with student test scores among the highest in the state.
With a low crime rate and a short commute to the freeway and BART, Albany is a desirable place to live for many of those who work and study in northern Alameda County and San Francisco

Berkeley caters to all whims, moods and tastes.
Tucked away from the cultural and commercial centers are quiet neighborhoods where children play on tree-lined streets. Berkeley offers the benefits of multi-cultural experience with a village-like ambiance.

The City of Oakland

Mayor Jerry Brown called it “the best kept secret in the Bay Area.” Hard to believe that a city of 400,000—the third largest city in the Bay Area—can keep that reputation. But visitors are always shocked and surprised to discover what Oakland has to offer.

Nestled between the San Francisco Bay and the coastal hills, Oakland’s balmy temperatures hover in the 60s for most of the year. The great weather and openness make the city a beacon for rich cultural diversity. Oakland is officially the most diverse city in the nation with over 81 languages spoken. From world-class sports teams to the highest number of artists per capita outside of New York City, Oakland truly offers it all.

The crown jewel of the city, Lake Merritt, is also a cultural magnet for the young and old alike. Your Saturday mornings could start with a relaxing walk around the lake and finish up drooling over fresh produce at the top-rated Farmer’s Market in the East Bay. Take a handmade gondola out onto the lake or bring the little ones to Children’s Fairyland, Walt Disney’s inspiration for Disneyland.

Oakland’s secret has already been leaked to the press. Two of Oakland’s neighborhoods, Rockridge and Montclair, were voted top places to live in the country by Money Magazine, while Forbes magazine ranked Oakland as the 8th best place to do business in the country. Not surprising, considering that the American Electronics Association 2001 survey said that Oakland has the highest high-tech job growth in all of California.

While Oakland may have a reputation, preconceptions are quickly forgotten after a visit to one of its wonderful neighborhoods. The renaissance of Oakland has already begun.

Adams Point
Adams Point is a picturesque neighborhood by the lakeshore whose name derives from the arrowhead shape of the land when it was first purchased. Adams Point is centrally located; the lakeshore borders one end, while downtown Oakland and the Grand/Lakeshore area neighbor the two other sides. It offers an avenue of shopping with views from the lake right across the street. Historically speaking, Adams Point has a tradition of diversity, welcoming people of all races since the ‘40s, when other areas had restrictions.

To wake up everyday and see the lake is reason enough.

Grand/Lakeshore
Grand Avenue and Lakeshore Avenue are diagonal streets that create a residential triangle in the middle with shopping areas on both borders. The districts that run along Grand Avenue and Lakeshore Avenue offer an eclectic mix of shops and eateries. An area where mom-and-pop stores compete with brand name stores to attract walking traffic. Anchored at the intersection of Grand and Lakeshore is the Grand Lake Theater, a 1920s movie theater that still features a Wurlitzer organ performance before movie showings on Friday and Saturday nights. Whether it’s an intimate dinner with friends or an afternoon with a cappuccino while you people-watch, the Grand/Lakeshore area offers you all the pleasures of urban living.

Montclair
Montclair Village lies at the base of the East Bay hills surrounded by affluent hillside residences and the adjacent City of Piedmont. Nestled in the hills amongst pine trees, Montclair provides a refreshing respite from urban living, which some resident families have enjoyed for generations. The sense of community and friendship enjoyed by Montclair residents enhances the small town appeal of the village. This inviting atmosphere makes it a treat to spend the day shopping and sight seeing in Montclair.

Recently ranked by Money Magazine as one of the top neighborhoods in the country, Montclair offers the perfect blend of convenience and community, close to the urban centers of Oakland and San Francisco, with the charm and security of a small town.

Montclair Village is clean and family oriented, yet exciting enough for the active crowd that enjoys biking and hiking through the hills. Proximity to many East Bay Regional parks makes it easy to plan a day trip exploring the beautiful mountain scenery. Enjoy an evening stroll through the village, browse the locally owned shops and finish your night at a coffee house or sidewalk café.

Piedmont Avenue
The Piedmont Avenue neighborhood is a 40-block area bounded by Broadway Avenue and Oakland Avenue to the west and east with Macarthur Avenue to the south and the city of Piedmont to the north. Set back from the bustle of the 580 freeway is Piedmont Avenue, the main thoroughfare of the neighborhood. The locals are an eclectic mix of art students, senior citizens and everything in between. Residents co-mingle on Piedmont Avenue on their way to either a cup of coffee at a one the local cafes, an independent movie at the Piedmont Cinema or a beautiful meal at one of Oakland’s top restaurants. Residents look to Piedmont Avenue for all their needs, from a quick five-minute errand to window-shopping on a free afternoon. Truth be told, Piedmont Avenue is the kind of place you reminisce about.

Rockridge
Oakland's leading neighborhood, Rockridge, combines big city sophistication with a relaxed casual environment. The name Rockridge is derived from a 1911 land tract whose columns still dominate its entrance on Broadway.

College Avenue is the vibrant commercial heart of Rockridge. The main corridor of College Avenue boasts upscale, independently-owned retail stores, cafes, coffee houses, a renowned gourmet market, bookstores and flower shops, in addition to acclaimed restaurants and art galleries. Rockridge Market Hall, the bustling cornerstone of retail on College Avenue, is a European-style market place with eight individual food and flower shops open to the sidewalk. Retail stores in the Pleasant Valley Shopping Center, near the junction of Broadway and College Avenue, provide shoppers with additional choices in gift giving.

In addition to great shopping, Rockridge offers professional offices, personal services and excellent restaurants. Families in this diverse neighborhood of artists and professionals are served by a number of excellent schools including the internationally recognized California College of Arts and Crafts, a Jesuit seminary, two elementary schools and a middle school. Surrounding the avenue on tree-lined streets are one and two-family homes, ranging in styles from Craftsman and Victorian to California Mediterranean and ultra-modern.

The City of Piedmont

With its name translating into, “at the foot of the mountain,” Piedmont is tucked away at the base of the East Bay hills. Though surrounded by Oakland, this enclave is its own city, incorporated in 1907. But don’t let the size (1.8 square miles) or the population (10,952) deceive you. Piedmont offers the quaintness of a small town with easy access to all the cosmopolitan offerings of San Francisco and the rest of the Bay Area.

Piedmont, like the rest of the Bay Area, enjoys moderate weather year round, allowing its citizens to enjoy the outdoors to the fullest; from nature hikes in the hills to quiet strolls down the tree-lined streets. Many of the homes were built at the turn-of-the-century, thus the variety of home architecture allows any walk-around-the-block to be an exciting endeavor.

If it’s the city you prefer, Oakland and Berkeley neighbor Piedmont and San Francisco is a mere 20-minute drive away. Its centralized location is unmatched in all of the Bay Area, in fact, according to census data, a majority of Piedmont’s commuters drive less than 30 minutes to work, most commutes were no more than ten to fifteen minutes.

Piedmont offers an idyllic haven for a family. The streets recall halcyon days; the parks play home to a variety of sports and other activities; and you can feel secure in the safety of your community. The Piedmont Unified School District is one of the highest rated districts in the Bay Area. Each of its schools, from elementary to high school has scored a perfect ten on its overall score according to the academic performance index.

Piedmont: the perfect suburb with everything in reach.
